properties-of-electron

Electrons are negatively charged elementary particles. They form a covering around the nuclei of atoms and ions. This or something similar is what you can read in textbooks. Soon, however, this information may have to be modified. The reason is that many physicists believe that the electrons can have a permanent electric dipole moment. One way to check is now being developed. (more…)

atom_imageA team of researchers believe that they have opened a door to a more detailed understanding of how the everyday world that is perceived through the senses of quantum world emerges from the ether.

Physicists call “classical world” to the everyday family environment. This is the world in which the people and the things around them seem to have measurable characteristics such as mass, height, color, weight, texture and shape.

The quantum world is the world of the building blocks with which matter is made of: atoms. These are combinations of neutrons and protons to form a nucleus and electrons orbiting around it, attracted by it because of electrical attraction. (more…)

minos

An international team of scientists from the MINOS experiment at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) announced the most accurate measurements to date of the parameters that govern the oscillations of antineutrinos, or antineutrinos transformations from one type to another.

This achievement provides crucial information on the mass difference between different types of antineutrinos. (more…)

vibration

A stormy day makes the poles with traffic signals to shake and the leaves of the tree shook noisily. These are the vibrations that a research group at Cornell University is using and transforming it into electricity through a new energy storage system.

This group, led by Frank Moon, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and whose members include Rona Banai, Kevin Pelletier and Jamie Pratt, are working in an efficient and cost to convert the vibrations induced by wind into electricity. Just as the solar panels on many roofs look now, the researchers predict a possible future in which buildings are common vibration equipped with panels that could store the energy transmitted by even the slightest of breezes. Scientists have captured the first images of electrons that seem to grow so huge mass under certain extreme conditions, thus solving a mystery of 25 years on how electrons behave in metals. The discovery could help design new materials to create superconductors able to operate at high temperatures.

The Great Accelerator Hadron Collider (LHC), located near Geneva, Switzerland, has achieved an important new step in her journey to meet some of the most intricate mysteries of the universe, such as composition of matter and its true origins. The ‘God machine’, as popularly known, has managed to set a new record and has produced no less than 10,000 collisions of particles per second, twice what it was capable of until now. (more…)

A group of MIT researchers has found a way to calculate the effects of Casimir forces, thus providing a way to prevent the components of micro-machines from sticking together.

casimir-force

Discovered in 1948, Casimir are complicated quantum forces that affect only the objects that are tightly close together. They are so subtle that most of this period of six decades since its discovery, engineers have ignored without problems.

However, with the arrival of the era of tiny electromechanical devices such as accelerometers in some mobile phones or digital micro-mirror projectors in the Casimir forces have proved that create conflict because they can produce the tiny moving parts micro-machines of sticking together. Dzero-resulScientists of the DZero international agenda in the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in the United States have found evidence of a significant violation of matter-antimatter symmetry in the behavior of particles containing quarks Bottom, a breach that goes beyond what is predicted in the present theory, the Standard Model of particle physics.

The new result shows 1 percent difference between the production of muon pairs and pairs of antimuon in the decay of B mesons result of high energy collisions in the Tevatron particle accelerator at Fermilab. (more…)

tevatron

One of the most ambitious experiments in the Tevatron in Illinois (USA), veteran competitor of the LHC in Geneva, just get a great result that could unravel one of the greatest secrets of the universe and revolutionize the world of physics. The scientists behind the old particle accelerator believe they have found the reason why matter dominates over antimatter, a hypothesis to be confirmed once the completion the test, called DZero, which may explain why the cosmos is the way it is. NASA and ESA will build the largest scientific instrument in history, which seek to verify the last leg of the set of postulates that Einstein formulated his theory of general relativity. According to physicist, major cosmic events, such as black holes and death of stars, producing gravitational waves that stretch across the universe. This is the last piece of his theory is not yet confirmed and that this instrument is intended to solve.
Albert-EinsteinTo achieve this, the NASA and ESA, U.S. space agencies and Europe respectively, have been proposed to launch into space three ships that contain a floating cube of gold-platinum. These ships will be positioned to 5 million miles of each other, forming an equilateral triangle. To give us an idea, that’s 13 times the distance from Earth to the Moon. Once you reach the exact location, a laser trigger which should correspond small cubes of 4.6 cm edge. The accuracy of this measurement system reaches astonishing heights, for up to 40 millionths of a millionth of a meter of accuracy. This may verify the existence of gravitational waves predicted. Absolutely amazing. (more…)
