sound-synthesis

A delicate wine glass crashing to the ground. A stone is thrown against a window pane. Someone broke a ceramic figurine hammer to see what lurks inside. Moments like these in an animated film in a video game or a Virtual Reality environment, will not seem real unless the sound is perfectly matched with action. However, that kind of sounds is very difficult to synthesize.

A team of scientists from Cornell University is developing technology to synthesize the sounds that correspond to computer-animated images of brittle materials to be destroyed. (more…)

mouse_invisible

First there was the mouse, then the Mighty Mouse, then the Magic Mouse, then the wireless mouse and now the Invisible Mouse. Obviously there are no photos of this mouse as the mouse itself does not exist. dvdbluray

Japanese scientists announced that they will be able to multiply 1000 times the storage capacity of Blu-Ray DVD simply by applying the traditional one particular metal layer. The Blu-Ray seemed the perfect device to replace the ancient 4.7 GB disc, but the war was not won. (more…)

mit-researchersIn the past 20 years or so, many of the key advances in artificial intelligence research have materialized due to machine learning, in which computers learn to make predictions using a strategy of looking for patterns within large sets of data that train.

A new approach called probabilistic programming makes it much easier to build a machine learning system, but is only useful for a relatively small set of problems. Now researchers at MIT have discovered how to extend the approach to a class of much larger problems, with implications for issues as diverse as cognitive science, financial analysis and epidemiology. A researcher from Queensland University of Technology has found that a little-used authentication system on the internet in the 80s could make it possible for users of the current internet securely authenticate only once per session.

As this researcher warns any future one-time password system, which can potentially give users access to multiple accounts, including e-mail and banking, will require an extreme privacy to avoid spyware and hackers. (more…)

According to an article published on April 19, 2007 in the online version of The Guardian, now that Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have released their new consoles on the market is revealed and commented on something: to chart the next-generation games are incredible, but the game mode, ie the underlying technology is the same as 10 years ago.

According to them, artificial intelligence (AI) is a potential for discovery that could revolutionize the games of any genre. (more…)
