Cleaning products used in homes and in commercial or agricultural facilities, could be contributing to increased bacterial resistance in food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella. This is the disturbing discovery made by a team of scientists from the University of Birmingham.

The authors of the study recommend a drastic reduction in the use “frivolous” of biocides, especially in household products, to ensure that the number of resistant bacterial strains does not increase. (more…)

malaria-algae

The old debate about the origin of certain parasites that cause malaria and algae responsible for toxic red tides may have finally solved thanks to a discovery made during an investigation conducted by a team of experts from the University of British Columbia, Canada.

The botanist Patrick Keeling, a professor in that university, has described the genome and its role Chromera definitively linking the evolutionary histories of malaria and dinoflagellate algae. (more…)

pyrophosphiteResearchers at the University of Leeds have found new clues about the origins of life on Earth. The team has discovered that a compound known as pyrophosphite may have been an important source of energy for primitive forms of life.

There are several theories about how life appeared on Earth from inanimate matter billions of years ago. As indicated by Terry Kee from Leeds University, who led the research, it is a question as the egg and chicken. Scientists are not in agreement on what came first, if the replication or metabolism. But there is a third element in this dilemma, and energy. (more…)

HoffmannA group of scientists has obtained the first three-dimensional images of the double membrane surrounding mycobacteria, ending a long debate about the nature of the outer membrane and opening new avenues for product development against tuberculosis.

Currently, about ten million people suffer from the disease annually, and every day nearly 4,000 patients die by it. Medical treatment is long and there are no efficient vaccines. (more…)
