HoffmannA group of scientists has obtained the first three-dimensional images of the double membrane surrounding mycobacteria, ending a long debate about the nature of the outer membrane and opening new avenues for product development against tuberculosis.

Currently, about ten million people suffer from the disease annually, and every day nearly 4,000 patients die by it. Medical treatment is long and there are no efficient vaccines. (more…)

photosynthesisImagine a technology that not only provide a source of clean energy and renewable, but it could also help clean the atmosphere of excessive carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. This is the promise of artificial version of photosynthesis, the process by which many plants have converted solar energy into electrochemical energy for millions of years.

To achieve this success, however, scientists need a much better knowledge of how Nature does it, starting with the harvesting of sunlight and transport of this energy to electrochemical reaction centers. (more…)
