Work is underway to develop a technology that could end up being able to sequence the genome of a person in minutes, and at a fraction of the cost of current commercial techniques. The patent for this revolutionary technique has already been processed.
Joshua Edel team from Imperial College London, has already developed a prototype system that they believe it may be, within ten years, a fully operational and commercial tool for ultrafast DNA sequencing.
The research suggests that scientists may end up getting a complete genome sequence with a single process in the laboratory, very different from what happens today, when only one genome can be sequenced after dividing it into fragments by a highly complex process and time consuming.
